David Summers is a Senior Consultant within the Power Group of HDR in Charlotte, NC. David has been a proud member of ASME for more than 30 years. David is a mechanical engineer with 30+ years of experience in the design, and operational support of nuclear, fossil and hydroelectric generating facilities including equipment assessment, systems design, equipment specification, and procurement. His work experience includes design, construction, commissioning, due diligence reviews, plant assessment, and project engineering. His hydroelectric experience includes major refurbishment projects for conventional hydroelectric facilities with responsibilities for project management and mechanical systems design.
David’s professional career began with Duke Power Company in 1981. He stayed with Duke Power Company and affiliate Duke Energy companies until 2003. He has worked for consulting A/E firms since 2003. His work experience includes Federal, municipal, state and private clients. Mr. Summers’ work experience includes design, construction, project engineering, and startup of Duke Energy’s 1,065 MW Bad Creek Pumped Storage Project. His international experience includes hydroelectric projects in Central America, South America and the Philippines.
Professional Memberships include: the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Professional Engineers of North Carolina, and the National Society of Professional Engineers. David is a registered Professional Engineer in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, California and Texas. David is a graduate of NC State University with a BSME degree and Wingate University with an MBA degree. David volunteers for Habitat for Humanity and Crisis Assistance Ministries among other charities. His hobbies include golf and riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle.
